Getting to Know….Cindy Joslyn, Nurse-Midwife

Cindy Joslyn, Certified Nurse Midwife, joined the WHCMA family in January 2013 and has practiced in Worcester for 20 years.  We are incredibly fortunate to have her on the medical staff here at Women’s Health.  Cindy is accepting new patients at both our Webster Lake and Shrewsbury Street offices.  Learn more about Cindy by reading her interview below.

How did you decide you wanted to become a nurse-midwife?

Cindy: I worked in labor and delivery as a nurse for about 8 years before returning to graduate school to become a nurse-midwife. I chose to return to school because I loved helping families in labor and wanted to continue that relationship both before and after pregnancy.

What are some of your favorite aspects of your midwifery practice?
Cindy: I really enjoy caring for teens and young adults, they are often nervous about the first visit to the gynecologist’s office. I think I help to make the visit a little less scary. I have cared for many mothers and daughters – actually, I have cared for some women whom I had delivered!
Cindy: I believe that midwifery care is much more than delivering babies. I try to educate the families I care for so they can make decisions for themselves – whether I am at the delivery or not. I find that patients have an easy time relating to me and I have developed many long standing relationships with them. It is great to meet a teen, help her with gynecologic care, and then go on to care for her throughout pregnancy and beyond. Here at Women’s Health I have found a wonderfully supportive group of doctors and staff. I am very confident that my patients will get exceptional care from whoever cares for them throughout labor and delivery.

Could you tell us a bit about yourself outside of work?
Cindy: I have 4 kids ranging in age from 11 to 28. My oldest daughter just got married; so now I have a son-in-law!! I grew up in Rutland and have lived in Holden for the last 16 years. I have worked in Central Mass since becoming a midwife – 20 years ago!
Cindy: Outside of work I love to go camping with my family. We enjoy state parks with no hookups! It is a great way to reconnect with everyone without any electronic devices. I also like hiking… we try to pick at least 2 new hikes every summer, and often repeat our favorites as well. Some of our favorite hikes are in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. At home, I am involved in my children’s sporting events — a never ending schedule of lacrosse, softball, baseball and basketball. I love attending all the games and watching my children learn and grow. I like gardening – we have a small vegetable garden and some flower beds – or, just hanging out in the yard with the kids and the dog (we have a 3 year old black lab named Jake).

This is the first interview in our Women’s Health “Getting to Know” series.  Stay tuned for our next interview with Leah Wilson, MD!
